Retreat Review – Island Flow Yoga & Retreats, Italy

Retreat Story: Sardinia, Italy

While Palm Springs and Kenya introduced me to intimate and adventurous retreats, Italy revealed something entirely different: the energy of a large group retreat balanced with the elegance of a private villa stay.

Island Flow Yoga & Retreats, founded by Lauren Ferrante, brought together more than 30 travelers in a breathtaking Italian villa, weaving together yoga, culture, and connection. Lauren is known for carefully scouting private villas before hosting, ensuring the environment feels both luxurious and welcoming—a backdrop that shaped every moment of this trip.

The structure was simple yet rich: daily yoga and sound baths grounded the mornings, while curated excursions gave us the chance to explore Italy’s culture by day and night. From winery tours to a serenade by opera singers, from themed dinners to a sun-soaked boat day, the retreat struck a balance between movement, culture, and leisure.

Noteworthy Moments

This retreat wasn’t just about yoga—it was about choice. Some days, guests dove into excursions, while others simply enjoyed slow mornings with coffee by the pool or afternoons by the sea. That flexibility gave everyone the ability to shape their own rhythm within the retreat.

The best part for me was the people. I made a conscious effort to connect with everyone individually, and each conversation revealed new stories, perspectives, and laughter.

One moment that stood out came from a gentleman from Texas who had never practiced yoga before. After a few sessions, he shared how great he felt and added, “Yogis are my people.” It captured the retreat perfectly: a space where both longtime practitioners and total newcomers felt at home.

The Takeaway

Italy reaffirmed a growing theme across my retreat experiences: each retreat is different, shaped by its host, setting, and group dynamic. This retreat leaned more toward the destination and social component, offering less intensity on the physical side but more opportunities to immerse in culture and community.

It also reminded me that the “something” you leave with is often unexpected. Some traveled for the yoga, others for the culture, and others simply for rest. But everyone left with something new—be it connection, inspiration, or the joy of discovering themselves in a different light.
